Interactive online training that keeps participants involved even though they speak different languages
i. Context
The Association of Supervisors of Banks of the Americas (ASBA) organizes hybrid and online seminars, workshops and training sessions that often last for several days and are attended by participants from across the continent. Although most are held in Spanish and English, sometimes banking officials attend whose mother tongue is Portuguese or French.
ii. Challenges
1. Ensure smooth and effective communication between speakers of the region’s different languages.
2. Maintain the interest of participants in long sessions with lots of content and complex themes.
iii. Solution
Set up systems that foster interaction between participants in their own language: multilingual chats, translated presentations, simultaneous interpreting in plenary sessions and in working rooms, and surveys in the various languages used.
iv. Results
The participants were able to read, write, listen and speak in their own language, which encouraged interaction and enabled the course to include different activities that made it easier to learn and avoided mental fatigue among attendees.
Interaction during a course is key to maintaining interest, facilitating active learning and reinforcing acquired knowledge. Multiple studies demonstrate that human beings have a limited capacity for sustained attention, meaning that alternating activities, encouraging participation and fostering dialogue are all important strategies that serve to avoid mental fatigue and improve information retention.
